NOAA Removes Goliath Grouper from Species of Concern List
Harvesting still prohibited.
In early February, NOAA fisheries service removed the goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara) from the species of concern list because a recent status report showed a significant increase in abundance. The report also showed that the species is re-establishing itself throughout its historical range.
However, the stock is still considered “over-fished,” and therefore all harvest is prohibited.
“The goliath grouper is becoming a success story,” said Dr. Roy Crabtree, Regional Administrator for NOAA Fisheries southeast regional office. “Federal and state conservation and regulatory measures have prevented elevation to the endangered or threatened status.”
There is no clear timeline yet regarding when a recreational harvest might be allowed.
