Gulf Grouper Surveys Under Review
NRC committee to look at data-collection methods that led to Gulf closure.
The National Research Council will accept public comments October 27 in Tampa on survey methods used to determine recreational grouper catches in the Gulf of Mexico. Extremely questionable 2004 survey numbers resulted in reduced recreational red grouper limits and the upcoming 2-month closure of federal Gulf waters to all recreational grouper harvests.
The Council committee study will review the types of survey methods used to estimate catch per unit effort and effort in recreational fisheries. To attend this meeting, RSVP to Phil Long (plong@nas.edu) by Oct 21. Please include in your RSVP whether you wish to comment. Comments will be limited to five minutes.
The agenda for this meeting is posted on the committee website at http://dels.nas.edu/osb/Rec_Fish.shtml. The meeting will be held at the Wyndham Harbour Island Hotel, 725 South Harbour Island Blvd, Tampa.
