Report claims Florida leads the nation in wetlands loss.
According to a study by the St. Petersburg Times, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stamps its seal of approval on more loss of wetlands than in any other state. The report claims that from 1999 to 2003, the Florida Corps approved more than 12,000 permits to destroy wetlands, while turning down exactly one.
Since 1990, at least 84,000 acres of habitat have disappeared, despite a federal wetlands preservation policy that supposedly results in no net loss of wetlands.
