A troublesome red algae bloom stretching from Cedar Key to Clearwater on Dec. 20 has expanded south, with the worst area from Tarpon Springs to Englewood, as observed on Jan. 28 by a NOAA satellite. Analyses by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute and Mote Marine Lab confirm high concentrations of the Florida red tide organism Karenia brevis, in samples taken from one to 20 miles offshore. There are also moderate to high concentrations along the beach and inside Sarasota Bay.
Respiratory irritation and dead fish have been reported along the shore. Afternoon seabreezes could escalate the irritating effects of the bloom. Beachgoers with severe or chronic respiratory conditions (such as emphysema or asthma) are advised to avoid red tide areas.
For dealing with adverse health effects as a result of exposure to harmful algae, call the red tide hot line at 1-888-232-8635.
