Farewell, Waterman
Department Editor Charles F. Waterman passes.
We’re saddened to report the death of Charles F. Waterman, long-time FS columnist and one of the most influential outdoors writers of our time. Waterman, 91, passed away January 12 in DeLand—a Central Florida hamlet of shady oaks and shining waters where he and his surviving wife Debie had lived for a number of years. Much loved by readers for his wit and wide expertise, “Charley,” as many of us knew him, was a regular contributor to Florida Sportsman Magazine since our very first issue in 1969. Saltwater fishing, bass fishing, fly fishing, hunting, photography—Charley did it all, and he did it well. Born in Kansas in 1913, Waterman traveled extensively: as a combat photographer in World War II; as a roving sporting journalist; as a guest instructor on fishing and hunting subjects; and as a passionate outdoorsman, sharing many days afield with Debie, his wife of 60 years. Charley’s final contribution to FS appears in the February 2005 issue, out next week. The February column he had written was a sendoff to readers, as he’d decided to retire from full-time writing last month. An accompanying tribute from Senior Editor Vic Dunaway was written prior to his passing. Many Waterman columns will be featured in Florida Sportsman Online, bringing his special touch and remarkable insights to new generations as well as providing welcome encores for veteran readers.
