Deerfield Beach to Key Largo
Oct. 17-20 SO Deerfield Beach to Key Largo & Flamingo to Cape Sable High pressure will move into South Florida during the weekend and a weak cold front is expected to fall apart as it approaches South Florida sometime on Sunday. Winds will be out of the east northeast at 15 to 20 miles per hour throughout the weekend. Pompano Beach, Port Everglades, Haulover, Government Cut to Ocean Reef A week of strong winds from the east and northeast this week stirred up the waters near shore bringing a good run of bluefish, jacks, bluerunners, a few mackerel, large ladyfish and pompano along the beaches and just outside the ocean inlets. Best action was on the outgoing tides fishing baits on or near the bottom. Offshore in depths from 80 feet out to 200 small kingfish continue to hit live pilchards, dead sardines fished on jigs and butterfly jigs allowed to hit the bottom and then reeled to the surface in a fast retrieve. Make sure to add a piece of #3 copper wire to your leader to keep the kingfish from cutting your line. Scattered dolphins from schoolies to fish in the 25 pound range have been moving along the Gulf Streams edge and this weekend due to the strong winds the edge should be closer to shore. Schools of small blackfin tunas with a few baby bluefins mixed in were eating small feathers trolled in the areas that these fish were seen feeding. Sailfish have started to show up along the outer reef and along current rips and weedlines. Nighttime bottom fishing has been producing a mixed bag of yellowtail, mangrove, mutton and lane snappers, red groupers, bluefish and kingfish for anglers that are anchoring and chumming. High tide at Government Cut Friday night will be at 11:17. North Biscayne Bay Inshore Large schools of finger mullet had attracted lots of attention from tarpon, snook, large jack crevalles, barracudas and large sea trout. These mullet schools have been pushed south but more are on their way so if the winds will lie down a bit you might see some hot action during the early mornings and late afternoons in North Biscayne Bay. Nighttime snook and tarpon action has been tough due to the high winds and rough water. South Biscayne Bay Windy conditions have hampered shallow water flats fishermen that have been targeting small tarpon, snook, bonefish and permit on the flats of South Biscayne Bay. Best bet is to get out early when winds have been the lightest and then fish the backsides of the Oceanside islands. Low tide at Soldier Key on Saturday will be at 6:25 in the morning. Flamingo in Everglades National Park Large schools of finger mullet have almost every predator in Florida Bay eagerly feasting on the silver morsels. All of the channels, islands and points near any grass or mud flat has had the finger mullet schools nearby and snook, redfish, sea trout, sharks, tarpon and jacks are tearing them apart. Live finger mullets hooked to a ΒΌ ounce Hook Up lure or Rapala Twichin Raps, Skitter Walks and X Raps as well as a finger mullet fished under a Cajun Thunder are getting the strikes from these fish. The same techniques can be used in East Cape Canal, Lake Ingram, Middle Cape the shorelines and points all the way to the Harney River and into Shark River and Whitewater Bay. Find a wind protected point and the fish will be there. High tide at Flamingo in Florida Bay on Saturday will be at 5:25 AM and in Whitewater Bay high tide is at 5:34 AM.
