Deerfield Beach to Key Largo & Flamingo to Cape Sable

A week cold front will fall apart over South Florida and give us a quick reminder of what is in store for us for the next six months. Winds are forecasted to be out of the northeast at 15 to 25 and stronger at times throughout the weekend. Speckled sea trout and vermillion snappers seasons are closed as of November 1st . Trout season will reopen on January 1st 2010 and vermillion snapper season will reopen on March 31st 2010.

Pompano Beach, Port Everglades, Haulover, Government Cut to Ocean Reef

Before the winds picked up anglers were finding tarpon, large jack crevalles and snook in and around the oceanside inlets. Spanish mackerel and a few bluefish could be found scattered along the beaches. Offshore scattered kingfish and mutton snappers were being caught outside the 90 foot mark. Along the color change that was moving in and out from 300 feet as far out as 900 feet of water dolphins in the five to 20 pound class plus small skip jack tuna, blackfin tuna, small wahoo and sailfish were being caught under scattered debris and along the broken Sargasso weeds. Frigate birds and terns were helpful in locating the offshore fish. Nighttime bottom fishing was producing large yellowtails plus mutton, mangrove and lane snappers. High tide at Government Cut Friday night will be at 11:10.

North Biscayne Bay Inshore

Big schools of pilchards continue to hold in North Biscayne Bay and small jacks, bluefish, mackerel and large jacks have been feeding on these baits throughout the day. On the grass flats snook, tarpon, jacks, snapper, sea trout, barracudas and quite a few bull sharks are feeding on small baitfish and on the large schools of mullet that have been ho0lding on the grass flats. Nighttime tarpon action has been fair on the outgoing tides next to bridge shadow lines.

South Biscayne Bay

Bonefish were cooperating but with the winds scheduled to be picking up by the weekend your best bet for South Biscayne Bay maybe to get behind the oceanside islands and look for cruising bonefish, permit, tarpon and sharks. Snook, snapper and grouper maybe an option in the protected passes between the oceanside islands. Fishing the finger channels of South Biscayne Bay may produce some mackerel and bluefish but getting to the channels may get you beat up by the rough water. Finger Channel water temperatures are still on the high side and many of the small groupers and snappers will not move into these channels till water temperatures get into the 70’s. Low tide at Soldier Key on Saturday will be at 6:18 in the morning.

Flamingo in Everglades National Park

Looks like fishing the open waters of Florida Bay and the Gulf may be tough this weekend due to strong northeast winds. Once the winds lay down again the Spanish mackerel, bluefish, tripletail and cobia may become the hot species to target along the edges of Florida Bay and the Gulf waters. Fishing the backcountry maybe the best bet for Flamingo this weekend! Large and small snook can be found next to many of the islands in Whitewater and Oyster Bays. Scattered redfish, snappers, goliath and gag grouper plus sea trout for catch and release can be targeted around the protected points and small creeks. Live shrimp on a Hook Up lure retrieved slowly should keep your fishing rods bent. Look for areas that have moving current with a slack water area close by for best results. Low tide at Flamingo in Florida Bay on Saturday will be at 2:21 PM and in Whitewater Bay low tide is at 2:14 PM.
